The UK has received the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia-powered ship, marking a significant milestone in efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry. The Fortescue Green Pioneer, a Singapore-flagged vessel, arrived in the UK to showcase ammonia as a sustainable fuel for ships. It is the first ship of its kind, featuring four-stroke engines, two of which can run on either ammonia or diesel.
Ammonia is a zero-carbon fuel with the potential to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping. The arrival of ammonia-powered ships demonstrates a path toward more sustainable maritime practices, an essential goal supported by the UK government. In collaboration with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the vessel and its team have ensured full compliance with UK regulations.
The Fortescue Green Pioneer recently docked at the Port of Southampton for a Port State Control inspection by the MCA’s Survey and Inspection team. It will then head to London’s West India Dock, operated by the Canal and River Trust, to showcase its technology and capabilities to maritime stakeholders, partners, and the public.

Maritime Minister Mike Kane expressed his excitement, stating, “It is a pleasure to welcome this ground-breaking vessel to the UK. This innovation is crucial in driving the decarbonization of the shipping industry. Through our UK Shore programme, we are committed to supporting technologies and alternative fuels that will lead to zero-emission shipping and position the UK as a clean energy leader.”
Lars Lippuner, MCA UK Client Services Director, emphasized the importance of decarbonizing the maritime sector. He said, “The Fortescue Green Pioneer has demonstrated the future of clean shipping. The MCA will conduct thorough safety checks and verifications to ensure the vessel is ready for continued operations. We are excited to collaborate with Fortescue to bring this innovative vessel to Europe and showcase the shift to sustainable marine fuels in the UK.”
