KGM Mobility, the South Korean car manufacturer formerly known as SsangYong Motor Company, has announced a new technical partnership with Phinia Delphi France SAS to jointly develop hydrogen engines.
KGM, known for its 4x4s, SUVs, MPVs, and pick-up trucks, is currently involved in the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy’s MOTIE project. This initiative focuses on promoting low-carbon technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. The project also aims to encourage renewable energy use, improve energy efficiency, and advance clean hydrogen technologies.
As part of this project, KGM plans to develop a two-liter diesel-based hydrogen engine and vehicle. The goal is to meet NOx emission standards and provide a driving range of over 500 kilometers. This engine is designed for both industrial and vehicle applications.
A KGM spokesperson highlighted the significance of hydrogen engines, saying, “Eco-friendly hydrogen engines are a key next-generation powertrain technology. The hydrogen engine developed through this partnership will not only be used in vehicles but also in construction and industrial machinery. With KGM’s expertise in internal combustion engines, we aim to lead the alternative fuel market and expand the eco-friendly pick-up segment, targeting specific opportunities in the internal combustion engine market.”
In addition to the hydrogen engine project, KGM plans to introduce plug-in hybrid technology across its existing vehicle lineup in 2025.
Phinia, a global supplier of hydrogen and diesel engine components, will contribute to the partnership by providing engine management systems (EMS), injectors, and pumps. The company will also integrate its diesel engine technology with Phinia’s fuel injection and ECU technologies to help drive the project forward.
