Jupiter Wagons Limited, a leading manufacturer of railway wagons, components, and castings, announced on April 3 that its subsidiary, Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Ltd (JTRF), has acquired land in Haldiapada, Khordha, Odisha. The site will be home to India’s first private-sector railwheel and axle forging plant. This development highlights Odisha’s growing importance as a hub for high-tech industrial manufacturing and marks the region’s first private railway engineering project.
The company plans to invest ₹2,500 crore in the plant, which will be built in phases. When fully operational, the facility is expected to produce 100,000 forged wheelsets annually, catering to both domestic and international markets. Around 50% of the production will be exported, primarily to Tatravagonka A.S., a Slovakian rail infrastructure company, as well as other clients in Europe. The project is part of the “Invest Odisha” initiative, supported by Invest India, and will be built on land from the IDCO land bank. The plant has already obtained the necessary environmental and statutory clearances.
The plant is slated to begin operations by 2027 and will significantly enhance India’s railway manufacturing capabilities. It will also support the country’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Additionally, the facility is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the plant will meet the rising demand for high-speed and high-load railway components. By manufacturing these critical parts domestically, Jupiter Tatravagonka aims to reduce India’s reliance on imports while increasing its presence in international markets, especially in Europe.
