IndiGrid, a leading Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) in India’s power sector, has launched the country’s first regulated utility-scale standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Delhi. The system, with a capacity of 20 MW/40 MWh, marks a significant development in India’s energy storage infrastructure.
The project, named Kilokari BESS Private Ltd (KBPL), is IndiGrid’s first commercial venture into the battery energy storage sector. It aims to improve the integration of renewable energy into the grid, enhance grid stability, manage peak electricity demand, and meet various ancillary services, according to IndiGrid.
IndiGrid was awarded the project by BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) in October 2023. The project was completed in record time due to the joint efforts of BRPL, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Ampere-hour Energy (AHE), and other key partners.
Harsh Shah, CEO and Whole-Time Director of IndiGrid, emphasized, “Battery energy storage is vital for creating a resilient and efficient energy system in India. As we shift toward cleaner energy sources, effective power storage and dispatch will be crucial for grid stability and renewable energy integration. This project is an important step toward that goal.”
IndiGrid has a diverse portfolio that includes transmission lines, solar power generation, and battery energy storage systems across India. The company has also been expanding into new projects in recent years. To date, IndiGrid has successfully launched six projects under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding and Regulated Tariff Mechanism for both transmission and energy storage systems.
IndiGrid currently manages 41 power projects, which include 49 transmission lines covering more than 8,700 km, 15 substations with a total transformation capacity of 22,550 MVA, 855 MW AC (1.1 GWp) of solar power, and 450 MW/900 MWh of battery storage. The company’s assets under management are valued at over INR 294 billion (around $3.4 billion).
