The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth Rs 2,385 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to supply and install advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems on Mi-17 V5 helicopters operated by the Indian Air Force.
The agreement, signed in New Delhi, includes EW suites, modification kits, and installation services. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present during the signing. The project falls under the ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)’ category.
According to an official statement, these new EW systems will improve the helicopters’ ability to survive in hostile environments. The upgraded systems will help detect threats and provide protection during missions.
Most of the components and sub-assemblies will be sourced from Indian manufacturers. This will support local industries, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and further strengthen the domestic defence ecosystem.
The deal reflects India’s continued push towards self-reliance in defence technology. It also supports the Make-in-India initiative, which encourages the development and production of defence equipment within the country.
BEL, a government-owned company based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is a key player in India’s aerospace and defence sector. Founded in 1954, the company mainly produces high-tech electronic systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
Over time, BEL has expanded its operations to include civilian products such as solar power solutions, e-governance systems, and radar technologies. It has a strong focus on indigenous development and innovation.
The company runs several manufacturing units and R&D centers across India. It employs thousands of skilled professionals who work to design and produce reliable and advanced electronic equipment.
This contract highlights BEL’s vital role in modernising India’s defence forces and its contribution to building a self-reliant defence industry.
