Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) has launched Honeywell Protonium™, a next-generation technology suite designed to enhance the performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability of green hydrogen production. This new suite will first be implemented by Aternium, a leading U.S.-based clean hydrogen producer, at its upcoming Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2). This facility is one of seven hubs selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Energy to support the country’s clean energy development.
Honeywell Protonium™ addresses key challenges in green hydrogen production, including fluctuating power supply, emissions reduction, and high operational costs. The suite optimizes electrolysis efficiency and simplifies both plant design and daily operations by incorporating advanced process automation and system optimization.
Andrew Cottone, CEO and Founder of Aternium, explained, “Our choice to implement Honeywell Protonium™ for our Mid-Atlantic projects reflects our commitment to achieving top-tier efficiency and safety. Honeywell’s history of industrial innovation will be essential in helping us reliably and responsibly produce clean hydrogen, creating long-term value for all our stakeholders.”
Pramesh Maheshwari, President of Honeywell Process Solutions, added, “By enhancing the design and operation of hydrogen plants, Honeywell is playing a crucial role in making green hydrogen more commercially viable. As green hydrogen continues to grow, it’s vital for producers to embrace automation and smart technologies to aid the shift to cleaner energy.”
The Honeywell Protonium™ suite includes three main solutions to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of green hydrogen production. The Concept Design Optimizer helps developers make quicker, more informed investment decisions during the early planning stages, ultimately reducing the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). This tool simplifies the design process, ensuring that hydrogen facilities are both financially and operationally efficient.
In addition, the Hydrogen Electrolyser Control System and the Hydrogen Unified Control and Optimizer play vital roles in boosting efficiency. The electrolyser control system monitors and adjusts performance to improve efficiency and extend equipment lifespan, while the unified control solution oversees energy distribution and plant operations, increasing productivity and cutting operating costs through real-time data and digital modeling. Together, these solutions offer a comprehensive approach to optimizing green hydrogen infrastructure.
Available globally, Honeywell Protonium™ aims to help clean hydrogen producers reduce emissions, lower costs, and advance toward their sustainability goals.
