BC Hydro’s Site C project has reached an important milestone, as the fourth of six generating units is now online. This means that two-thirds of the project’s generating capacity is now operational.
Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, praised the achievement. “Congratulations to all the workers at Site C for reaching this important milestone in construction,” he said. “Another generating unit in operation is another step forward as we work to build a secure supply of clean, affordable, reliable electricity to power British Columbia into the future.”
The Site C project has made steady progress since the first unit was activated in October 2024. The second unit followed in December, the third in February, and now the fourth is operational. Each unit can generate more than 180 MW of electricity.
With the fourth unit up and running, BC Hydro has started testing the fifth unit. The project is on track to have all six generating units operational by fall 2025.
In August 2024, BC Hydro began filling the Site C Clean Energy Project reservoir in northeast British Columbia, after completing the necessary construction. Filling the reservoir enables the generating station, spillways, turbines, and generators to begin operating.
Once fully completed, Site C will become the third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeast BC. The facility is expected to produce approximately 5,100 GWh of electricity each year, contributing about 8% more power to the local grid. The Site C reservoir will stretch 83 km long and cover 5,550 hectares of land, with a total surface area of around 9,330 hectares.
