In a significant boost to Guam’s power infrastructure, Aggreko has successfully integrated 20 megawatts (MW) of power into the island’s grid. The achievement, marked on July 18, 2024, follows the commissioning of temporary generator units designed to stabilize and enhance the island’s power supply.
The commissioning process commenced in early July when Guam Power Authority (GPA) officials engaged with Aggreko representatives. According to a GPA press release, Aggreko’s management, including John Wilson, Area Manager for North Asia, and George Whyte, Managing Director, met with GPA management and on-site teams to ensure a smooth integration process.
Aggreko initiated performance testing and conducted both internal and load testing of the generator units over several days. The testing phase was followed by meticulous coordination with GPA dispatch teams to establish effective communication channels and ensure seamless integration into the existing grid. By the evening of July 18, the generators successfully dispatched 20 MW into the grid, confirming their readiness for full operational capacity.
GPA General Manager John Benavente hailed the integration as a crucial milestone in the island’s strategy to secure a reliable power supply. “The successful implementation of this project with Aggreko represents a vital step towards maintaining an uninterrupted power supply for Guam. The additional 20 MW will allow our team to conduct necessary maintenance on generators that have been running at full capacity for the past year. This temporary relief supports our long-term goal of commissioning the Ukudu power plant by September 15, 2025, with preliminary testing scheduled for next year,” Benavente said.
Aggreko’s commitment to the project was evident, with Wilson acknowledging the importance of meeting the local government’s timeline. “We recognize the significance of delivering safely and on schedule within the 100-day period,” Wilson remarked.
George Whyte emphasized Aggreko’s efforts to deploy cutting-edge technology, noting, “We appreciate the support from the on-ground teams who expedited the rapid deployment of 20 MW of power. Our latest technology features highly efficient products that burn cleaner fuel, reducing emissions and minimizing the risk of power shortages.”
The successful integration of Aggreko’s generators comes as a relief to island residents who have faced rotating power outages due to an aging power supply system. The collaboration between GPA and Aggreko highlights a proactive approach to addressing Guam’s energy challenges and enhancing the island’s power capacity.
