The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center in Greencastle, situated approximately one mile north of the Maryland state line in Franklin County, will be closed on Thursday, August 1, for crucial backup generator installation.

The closure will be in effect from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Travelers are advised that the next available rest area on northbound I-81 is located just north of Exit 37, near Route 233/Newville.

This closure is part of a Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, a joint initiative by PennDOT and the Department of General Services launched in 2021. The GESA projects focus on upgrading building systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting, to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate escalating energy costs. These improvements are expected to significantly lower energy consumption and reduce utility expenses.
