Sagicor has pledged critical support to Caribbean islands affected by Hurricane Beryl, with plans to provide generators and solar streetlamps to Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and Union Island.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which recently swept through the Eastern Caribbean, Sagicor Life Inc. has announced a significant contribution aimed at aiding recovery efforts in the hardest-hit areas. The company will supply generators and solar-powered streetlamps to Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada, as well as to Union Island and other affected regions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Robert Trestrail, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Sagicor Life Inc., shared details of the initiative as teams on the ground in Grenada and St. Vincent began mobilizing support immediately following the storm’s passage. The initial response included donations of bottled water and canned food, coordinated by local Sagicor teams under the leadership of Stanley Browne and Cherryl Ann Boca.

“Our executives on the ground in St. Vincent and Grenada quickly engaged with local disaster agencies to assess the immediate needs,” Trestrail explained. “It became clear that power outages were a critical issue, so our focus has been on sourcing and delivering generators and solar streetlamps.”

Sagicor is utilizing local suppliers to procure these essential items for Carriacou and Petite Martinique. For Union Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, discussions are ongoing to finalize similar support, with additional supplies expected to be sourced off-island.

Donald Austin, Chief Executive Officer of Sagicor Life (Eastern Caribbean) Inc., emphasized the importance of a localized response. “Sagicor has been a part of these communities for over 100 years, so we strive to ensure our efforts are as locally driven as possible. By using local suppliers, we not only aid in disaster recovery but also provide commercial support to the affected countries,” Austin said.

Austin also highlighted the company’s multi-layered response strategy, which involved immediate checks on the wellbeing of team members, their families, and clients, followed by broader support for national relief efforts. “Our team members in unaffected countries are also encouraged to contribute, and they have been incredibly supportive during this challenging time,” he added.

Both Trestrail and Austin commended the dedication of their teams on the ground, who have been actively supporting their communities since Hurricane Beryl made landfall on July 1st. The company remains committed to ongoing relief efforts throughout the hurricane season.
