Generac Power Systems, traditionally renowned for its generators and battery backup systems, has strategically acquired Ageto, a Fort Collins, Colorado-based company specializing in microgrid controllers. This acquisition marks a significant expansion of Generac’s presence in the commercial and industrial (C&I) market.
Ageto, known for its ARC microgrid controller, has developed technology designed to integrate, optimize, and manage distributed energy resources, including conventional resources, renewable energy sources, and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The ARC microgrid controller provides a unified interface for monitoring all components of a microgrid, enhancing operational efficiency and reliability.
“This acquisition enhances our ability to offer a complete energy technology ecosystem to domestic commercial & industrial customers with multi-asset sites,” stated Erik Wilde, Executive Vice President and President of Domestic C&I at Generac. “By integrating Ageto’s industry-leading microgrid controller and advanced software into our systems, we’re simplifying asset integration, control, and optimization for our customers and creating a competitive advantage for Generac.”
Generac has been collaborating with Ageto since 2021, integrating Ageto’s microgrid controllers into its battery energy storage systems (BESS) solutions and generator sets. The acquisition was finalized on August 1, 2024, although the financial terms were not disclosed.
Recently, Generac was recognized by Wood Mackenzie as a leader in the residential solar-plus-storage market. The company, once known primarily for its fossil-fuel-based generators, has rapidly evolved into a major player in residential clean energy. Generac’s residential storage product, PWRcell, paired with the Concerto platform from Generac Grid Services, provides a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) that detects demand spikes and signals batteries to dispatch clean energy based on real-time grid conditions.
In addition to its advancements in residential clean energy, Generac has engaged in virtual power plant initiatives, including a partnership with Southern California Edison (SCE) to scale the utility’s Power Flex program.
Generac’s foray into the C&I market began with the acquisition of PowerPlay Battery Energy Storage Systems, an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm. PowerPlay specializes in turnkey battery energy storage systems for commercial and industrial customers, with systems capable of up to 7 MWh. This acquisition is intended to enable Generac to offer a more comprehensive ecosystem of products and solutions to C&I customers.
With these strategic acquisitions and integrations, Generac is well-positioned to lead in both the residential and commercial energy sectors, providing innovative solutions that address the evolving demands of energy management and sustainability.
