The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has initiated a special inspection at the Cook nuclear power plant in Bridgman following a series of diesel generator failures over the past two years.
According to NRC spokesperson Prema Chandrathil, the Cook plant has experienced multiple failures of its diesel generators during routine testing procedures. “Diesel generators are critical for providing backup power in the event of a loss of normal power sources,” Chandrathil explained. “At Cook, there are four emergency diesel generators, all of which have failed during routine tests. These generators must be tested frequently to ensure their reliability.”
Chandrathil emphasized the importance of the diesel generators being in optimal working condition. The NRC’s special inspection aims to thoroughly investigate the failures. “We have deployed a team of three experts who will conduct both on-site inspections and off-site reviews of relevant documents and records,” she added. “The duration of the inspection will depend on the findings.”
The inspection team will focus on several key areas, including the timeline of the failures, the plant’s troubleshooting and corrective measures, maintenance practices, and the overall capability of the plant to address and resolve these issues.
Once the inspection is complete, the NRC will release a detailed report to the public, providing insights into the findings and any necessary corrective actions.
