Former Polish Official on the Run Amidst Corruption Scandal over Generator Procurement for Ukraine

On Monday, August 26, the National Prosecutor’s Office of Poland issued a wanted notice for Michal Kuczmierowski, the former head of the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves (RARS). Kuczmierowski faces serious allegations involving the mismanagement of a procurement process for generators intended for Ukraine.

The arrest warrant, issued by the prosecutor’s office, follows a court decision last week to place Kuczmierowski in custody. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison.

The charges against Kuczmierowski stem from a broader investigation into alleged misconduct at RARS, an agency responsible for public procurement, and suspicions of his involvement in organized crime. The controversy erupted after an inquiry into the misallocation of funds designated for purchasing electric generators for Ukraine in 2023.

Reports indicate that Kuczmierowski allegedly facilitated a contract for these generators with an event agency that had previously worked with the ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS). The generators were reportedly of substandard quality and never reached Ukraine. Instead, it is claimed they were diverted to Polish firefighters as part of Kuczmierowski’s election campaign for a parliamentary seat with PiS.

In response to the scandal, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has vowed to disclose details of financial abuses committed by his PiS predecessors.
