Donaldson Company, Inc. is spotlighting its cutting-edge technologies at the IAA Transportation 2024 trade fair, which runs from September 17-22 in Hanover, Germany. Among the company’s key offerings are innovative alternative power filtration systems designed to enhance operational efficiency and longevity in non-diesel fuel applications.

Donaldson, leveraging over 25 years of experience with fuel cell manufacturers, is presenting advanced filtration solutions tailored for specific applications. The company’s ePTFE membrane support options are engineered to maintain high current density in a fuel cell’s proton exchange membrane (PEM), potentially reducing the number of cells required in a stack. This improvement promises enhanced durability and efficiency.

The new filtration technologies aim to support next-generation transport solutions by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Hydrogen fuel, often compromised by contamination from oil, water, other gases, and sulfur compounds, benefits from Donaldson’s high-pressure (<420 bar) and low-pressure (<25 bar) filters, which are designed to mitigate these issues effectively.

Donaldson also addresses the impact of particulates and chemical contaminants on fuel cell function and lifespan. The company’s latest cathode air filters, incorporating multiple layers such as activated carbon, and acid and base layers, are engineered to block sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ammonia while allowing customization for additional contaminants like butane and toluene.

A highlight of Donaldson’s display is the Tetratex membrane, which integrates directly into a fuel cell’s housing to create customized vent assemblies. The high-pressure Dual-Stage Burst filter, designed to provide a pressure relief of 25 liters/sec at 300 mbar, demonstrates advanced technology in action. Additionally, the Dual-Stage Jet, introduced earlier this year at The Battery Show in Stuttgart, offers rapid degassing capabilities—approximately 100 liters/sec at 100 mbar—enhancing safety for electric vehicles (EVs) with its intelligent poppet and cap design.

In addition to these innovations, Donaldson is showcasing a range of humidifiers, water separators, and coolant ion exchangers, all engineered for compatibility with new power technologies. These developments underline Donaldson’s commitment to advancing filtration solutions that meet the evolving demands of the transportation sector.
