Schaeffler and Vitesco Technologies Unveil Cutting-Edge Powertrain and Chassis Solutions at IAA Transportation 2024

At the IAA Transportation 2024 exhibition in Hanover, Germany, Schaeffler is presenting its latest advancements in powertrain and chassis technologies in a significant collaboration with Vitesco Technologies. The joint 250-square-meter showcase reflects a strategic partnership aimed at delivering comprehensive solutions for commercial vehicles, demonstrating the synergies between the two industry leaders.

“This joint display underlines the strength of our partnership,” stated Matthias Zink, CEO of Schaeffler Automotive Technologies. “By combining our innovative products, we aim to offer enhanced value to our customers and mark a significant step towards our goal of becoming the leading Motion Technology Company.”

According to Schaeffler’s projections, by 2030, approximately 20% of new commercial vehicle registrations will feature electric powertrains. Building on its longstanding expertise in electrified systems, Schaeffler’s merger with Vitesco Technologies is set to bolster its capabilities in powertrain electronics and software.

The showcase at the IAA Transportation highlights several key innovations, including:

  • Permanent-Magnet Electric Motors: Featuring wave winding technology and delivering over 200 kW of continuous output.
  • Fuel Cell Stacks: Utilizing graphite and metal bipolar plates with a maximum output of 140 kW.
  • 800-Volt Power Electronics: Employing silicon carbide semiconductors for enhanced efficiency.

A focal point of the display is the heavy-duty e-axle assembly, which integrates two electric motors, a three-speed transmission, electromechanical actuators, and silicon carbide power electronics. This design also incorporates insert-unit wheel bearings, offering a weight reduction of up to 15 kg per wheel compared to traditional tapered roller bearings.

Schaeffler’s analysis indicates that by 2030, nearly 75% of commercial vehicles will still use combustion engine technology, whether diesel or hydrogen. “Internal combustion engines will remain crucial for reducing emissions,” Zink noted. “Every gram of emission savings is vital in meeting climate targets.”

To address this need, Schaeffler is showcasing several technologies aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of hydrogen, diesel, and natural gas engines. Notably, the iFlexAir variable valvetrain system can reduce CO2 emissions from diesel engines by up to 5% and boost efficiency in hydrogen engines by 6%, while significantly lowering NOx emissions. This is complemented by Vitesco’s NOx sensor, which supports effective exhaust gas treatment and emission standard compliance.

Additionally, Schaeffler is presenting its advancements in chassis technologies designed to support highly automated driving. This includes the Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering System (EHPS), which facilitates Level 2 automation and higher autonomous driving functions, and the Advanced Sensor Cleaning System (ASCS), developed by Vitesco Technologies to ensure the reliable operation of autonomous vehicle cameras and sensors.

The IAA Transportation 2024 exhibition continues until September 22, showcasing the latest in transportation technology and innovation.
