Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has announced the expansion of its rigid hauler lineup in North America, introducing two new models to complement the existing R100. The newly added R60 and R70 haulers, with payload capacities of 55 tons and 65 tons respectively, are now available for order in the region.

These new additions to the Volvo CE fleet are designed to offer high productivity and stability, featuring a low center of gravity, balanced weight distribution, and a robust yet flexible chassis. The R60 boasts a body volume of 47 cubic yards (36 cubic meters), while the R70 provides 55.6 cubic yards (42.5 cubic meters), both of which are well-suited to pair with the Volvo CE EC950 crawler excavator and L350H wheel loader. Their V-shaped haul bodies are engineered to ensure maximum load retention and minimal carry-back after dumping.

The R60 and R70 are equipped with an advanced adaptive retarder system that automatically manages the rear braking system during downhill travel, enhancing both speed control and stability. The high-drive axle multiplication provides optimal traction, while the Cummins QSK 19 diesel engine, delivering 760 horsepower in both models, features Volvo Dynamic Shift Control for automatic gear selection and reduced fuel consumption. Additionally, an ECO mode defaults to the most efficient gear setting, and an auto engine idle function minimizes engine wear, further improving fuel efficiency.

To address long downhill journeys, the haulers include gear-dependent speed control and a selectable brake or transmission retarder, which also contributes to reducing operator fatigue. Safety features such as overspeed protection, a neutral coast inhibitor, fail-safe braking, and a secondary steering system ensure the machine remains securely on track.

Volvo CE emphasizes strong support through its dealer network, with parts and technicians readily available. Both the R60 and R70 models have 500-hour service intervals, and their maintenance is streamlined thanks to a user-friendly design with grouped maintenance points accessible from the ground or service platform. The use of common-sized bearings simplifies parts stocking and reduces costs.

On-board diagnostics provide detailed insights into system pressures, temperatures, and fault reporting, facilitating quicker troubleshooting.

Manufactured at Volvo’s plant in Motherwell, Scotland—an establishment with a 75-year history in rigid truck development—the new R60 and R70 haulers represent the latest advancement in Volvo CE’s commitment to delivering high-performance and reliable equipment.
