In a groundbreaking development for Spain’s energy sector, infrastructure company Redexis has commenced the injection of renewable hydrogen into the national natural gas supply through the country’s first hydrogen pipeline. The project, inaugurated on September 20, is touted as the first fully operational renewable hydrogen blending initiative in Europe.
This innovative strategy is part of a larger project in Mallorca aimed at supporting Spain’s decarbonization goals. Redexis officials emphasize that the scheme demonstrates the feasibility of integrating “green” hydrogen—produced from renewable energy sources—into the existing natural gas infrastructure.
Fidel López Soria, CEO of Redexis, celebrated the milestone during a ceremony marking the project’s launch, stating, “This achievement signifies a pivotal moment in the Spanish energy transition. With the first injection of green hydrogen into the natural gas network, we not only reinforce Redexis’ commitment to sustainability but also establish a pioneering model that can be replicated in other regions and countries. Currently, there is no other project of this scale in Europe.” The event took place at the Cas Tresorer site, the starting point for Mallorca’s natural gas distribution network.
Soria further noted, “We are taking a decisive step toward a cleaner and more renewable future, showcasing that infrastructure can effectively transform our continental energy system.”
A Step Toward Decarbonization
Margalida Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands government, remarked, “The Balearic Islands are pioneering the implementation of the first hydrogen pipeline that will transport green hydrogen for injection into the natural gas network. This clean energy source is vital for decarbonizing our islands and combating climate change. Additionally, it presents an opportunity for reindustrialization, positioning us as leaders in innovation and attracting green investments.”
The project is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives across Spain and Europe.
“This pioneering effort unlocks the significant potential for green hydrogen generation in our country,” said Miguel González Suela, Undersecretary for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. He highlighted the government’s support mechanisms, amounting to €3 billion, as crucial in fostering an attractive ecosystem for investments and innovative projects that will expedite the ecological transition. “Together, we are laying the groundwork for Spain to lead the global hydrogen market.”
Redexis is the sole company in Spain authorized by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to implement the green hydrogen injection system. The hydrogen pipeline originates on Camino de las Baterías and connects with the primary San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus transport pipeline. The injected hydrogen will be accessible to any natural gas customer in Mallorca linked to the system.
The blending of hydrogen and natural gas utilizes a static mixer designed to inject the precise volume of hydrogen into multiple high-velocity natural gas streams, ensuring a consistent gas composition with minimal turbulence. This initiative is part of the Green Hysland project, supported by the European Union through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, which includes over 30 entities, comprising energy companies and technology centers.
