The Lahore High Court has banned the operation of smoke-emitting commercial generators in designated ‘green lockdown’ areas to address air pollution.
Justice Shahid Karim, who was hearing petitions filed by citizens, including Haroon Farooq, aimed at reducing smog, directed that pollution control devices be installed on these generators within seven days.
The court’s written order, following a previous hearing, states that generators emitting harmful smoke should be sealed until the necessary pollution control devices are in place.
In addition, Justice Karim ordered the removal of encroachments in high-traffic areas to reduce congestion-related pollution and improve air quality.
The court praised the actions of the current government and the director general of environment, recognizing their positive impact on the environment. The public prosecutor had informed the court that superseeds had been distributed to farmers to help reduce crop burning.
The Lahore Division commissioner has been ordered to report on the operations of tanneries in Kasur within 15 days. The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) director general has also been instructed to implement the findings of an inquiry into underpass renovations. The hearing has been adjourned until Friday.
