This year, Ukraine has received critical support for its power system from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government of Japan. The assistance includes seven high-voltage autotransformers, five gas turbines, and thousands of generators, all aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
The details were shared in a statement from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs following discussions between Deputy Minister Mariana Betsa and UNDP’s Resident Representative in Ukraine, Jaco Cilliers, according to Ukrinform.
Cilliers highlighted ongoing projects in Ukraine and the key role of UNDP and Japan’s support for the energy sector. “This year, with the help of UNDP and Japan, Ukraine received seven autotransformers, five gas turbines, and thousands of generators. These contributions will support the Ukrainian energy system and ensure that citizens continue to have access to light and heat,” the statement noted.
The conversation also covered expanding UNDP’s support to Ukraine in recovering from the impacts of Russian aggression. This includes efforts to rebuild destroyed infrastructure, carry out humanitarian demining, and prepare regions for winter.
“We are grateful for the ongoing assistance from UNDP. Millions of Ukrainians recognize and appreciate your work. We look forward to continuing our joint projects to mitigate the effects of the Russian war,” said Mariana Betsa.
Both Betsa and Cilliers agreed to strengthen cooperation to further extend UNDP’s aid to Ukraine.
In related news, the United States has allocated EUR 825 million this year to help restore Ukraine’s energy system, which has been severely damaged by Russian attacks.
