Fiji Gas unveiled a hydrogen dual-fuel generator at its Lautoka depot today, in partnership with Obayashi Corporation from Japan and Halcyon Power from New Zealand.
Abdul Ali, Operations Manager at Fiji Gas, described the project as a significant milestone. He explained that the dual-fuel generator is now providing power to the Lautoka terminal, helping reduce the company’s electricity bill while the generator is in operation.
Ali emphasized that the project supports Fiji’s efforts to explore innovative solutions for decarbonizing energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. “This initiative positions Fiji as a leader in clean energy among small island nations,” he said. “We are proud to collaborate with Obayashi on this transformative hydrogen project and look forward to using the insights from this experience to help further Fiji’s renewable energy goals.”
Robakeibau Nayacalevu, an officer from the Ministry of Trade and Co-operatives, highlighted the importance of partnership in achieving this milestone. He noted that the dual-fuel generator’s flexibility demonstrates how energy infrastructure can be optimized while minimizing fossil fuel dependence.
The hydrogen dual-fuel generator aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions. This demonstration is the first of its kind in the Pacific Islands.
The project has an estimated total cost of $2 million USD.
