Estonia’s Defense Forces (EDF) are exploring the use of portable hydrogen fuel cell generators on the battlefield. The generators, which are quieter and safer than traditional diesel-powered alternatives, could be used to charge drone batteries and maintain communication equipment.
PowerUp Energy Technologies, an Estonian startup originating from the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics, is behind the development of these hydrogen fuel cell generators. The company aims to provide a cleaner and quieter power solution compared to the noise and environmental impact of diesel generators.
Dr. Ivar Kruusenberg, founder and CEO of PowerUp Energy Technologies, explained that the generators currently produce between 400 watts and 3 kilowatts of power. These units are already in use in various sectors, including healthcare, construction, and telecommunications. The only by-product from the generators is water vapor.
