Anchorage Fire Crews Warn of Generator Dangers Following Major Storm

by sthv

Anchorage fire crews have been working tirelessly over the past few days, responding to hundreds of emergency calls after a severe storm hit the area. As cleanup efforts continue, officials are urging residents to stay vigilant about a critical safety issue: the improper use of generators.

Anchorage Fire Chief Doug Schrage reported that firefighters handled more than 400 calls in just 24 hours on Sunday. With the storm now passed, crews have turned their attention to cleanup operations across the city.

However, many homes remain without power, leading to a surge in generator use. Chief Schrage emphasized the dangers of running generators improperly.

“We strongly advise residents not to operate generators or any heat-producing devices inside their homes or too close to their homes,” Schrage said. “Every year, Anchorage sees tragic deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning, often caused by these mistakes.”

Schrage urged residents to check their carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms to ensure they are functioning correctly. He also reassured the community that fire crews remain available to assist those in need.

“If you’re unsure about something or need help, please call us,” Schrage said. “We’re here to help, no matter the situation.”

As recovery efforts continue, fire officials are stressing the importance of safety. Residents with concerns about generator use or potential fire hazards are encouraged to contact the Anchorage Fire Department for guidance.

“Safety must come first,” Schrage added. “We want everyone to get through this recovery period safely.”
