Viavi Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) has unveiled its latest innovation, the TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator (AI RSG). This new tool builds on the company’s existing RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) test platform, adding advanced capabilities to simulate real-world network conditions in a lab environment. The AI RSG creates a digital twin of a Radio Access Network (RAN), enabling developers to test and optimize their solutions under realistic scenarios.
The launch comes at a critical time for developers aiming to participate in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF). The fund’s Third Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO 3) focuses on software solutions for vertical industries and integrated automation, making the AI RSG a valuable tool for those preparing competitive bids.
How It Works
The RIC platform leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to autonomously manage radio resources. It uses network data and applications—both native and third-party—to optimize performance. However, the growing complexity of multi-vendor open networks, combined with applications from diverse developers, often makes seamless operation a challenge.
The AI RSG addresses these challenges by using data collected through the Open RAN interface to train RICs and related applications (r/xApps). This training helps improve network quality of service, enables industry-specific features, boosts energy efficiency, and delivers other value-added benefits.
Key Features
The AI RSG can simulate up to 10,000 user devices (UE) and thousands of network cells (ranging from 1,000 to 5,000) per reference server. It is highly flexible, allowing deployment in cloud environments via Docker containers or on dedicated servers. The system’s scalability can be tailored to specific use cases, with data generation available at various intervals—from one minute to daily updates. A built-in scalability matrix helps define parameters for different testing scenarios.
Why It Matters
As the telecommunications industry moves toward more open, multi-vendor networks, tools like the AI RSG are essential for ensuring seamless performance and innovation. By replicating real-world conditions in a controlled lab environment, the AI RSG empowers developers to refine their solutions, meet industry demands, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
Viavi’s TeraVM AI RSG is now part of the company’s comprehensive testing and optimization portfolio, positioning it as a key player in supporting the next generation of wireless network development.
