British nuclear technology company newcleo has signed two key agreements with Slovakian companies to advance the development of Generation IV nuclear reactors. These partnerships aim to revolutionize the management of spent nuclear fuel and promote sustainable energy solutions.
The first agreement is with Jadrová vyraďovacia spoločnosť (JAVYS), Slovakia’s state-owned enterprise responsible for spent nuclear fuel management. The two companies will establish a joint venture called the Centre for Development of Spent Nuclear Fuel Utilisation (Slovakian CVP). JAVYS will hold a 51% stake in the venture, while newcleo will own 49%.
The Slovakian CVP will focus on two primary objectives:
- Developing and constructing an Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) power plant at the Jaslovske Bohunice V1 site in Slovakia. The plant will feature up to four of newcleo’s LFR-AS-200 reactors, which are based on advanced Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) technology.
- Creating a sustainable nuclear fuel supply chain with support from the French government. This initiative will focus on reprocessing and reusing Slovakia’s spent nuclear fuel, enabling long-term recycling as part of a closed fuel cycle.
The partnership will leverage newcleo’s planned fuel manufacturing plant in France to transform spent nuclear fuel into a reusable energy source. This approach is expected to significantly reduce the volume of nuclear waste requiring disposal in deep geological repositories.
This initiative aligns with global efforts to develop advanced nuclear technologies that minimize environmental impact and maximize resource efficiency.
