Spain’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, confirmed on Thursday that the Spanish government will be sending ten electric generators to Ukraine as part of its continued support for the country amidst the ongoing war with Russia. The announcement was made during the XXV meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine, held in Ramstein, Germany.
The meeting was convened by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, with attendance from 25 defense ministers, European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, alongside Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. During her speech, Robles reaffirmed Spain’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine and European security, outlining new material donations, training programs for Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel, and a humanitarian assistance initiative for Ukrainian families.
Continued Support for Ukraine
The shipment of ten electric generators will address some of the ongoing energy challenges Ukraine is facing due to Russia’s attacks on critical infrastructure. In addition to the generators, Robles confirmed that Spain will be offering further training programs for Ukrainian military personnel, along with a new humanitarian assistance package set to begin on January 12.
Robles also took a moment to express gratitude toward U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, recognizing his leadership in coordinating military support from over 50 nations to Ukraine. This meeting was particularly significant for Robles, as it marked her final participation in the Contact Group meetings in this format.
Ongoing War and Immediate Needs
The group was updated on the latest developments in the war, which has shown no signs of easing despite the winter months. Fighting continues to be intense in eastern Ukraine and the Kursk region of Russia, with Russia persistently targeting civilian infrastructure across Ukraine, further complicating life for the civilian population.
Attendees discussed the most pressing needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with a focus on short-term military requirements and ongoing support through various international coalitions. Robles, who was accompanied by Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez, Secretary General of Defense Policy, also held bilateral meetings with both Lloyd Austin and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to further discuss Ukraine’s needs and the continued international effort to provide support.
Spain’s Commitment to Ukraine
Robles’ announcement and the continued coordination of military and humanitarian aid reflect Spain’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression. The country’s support is a vital part of the broader international effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities while alleviating the humanitarian crisis caused by the war.
