CityFreighter has developed an innovative mobile solar tracker designed to provide independent power for mobile homes. This solar tracker automatically adjusts to follow the sun, ensuring optimal energy generation. At its core, the system uses lubrication-free motion plastics from igus, which allow precise, maintenance-free movement of the solar panel, even in harsh weather conditions.
The Solartrackr addresses a common issue for solar-powered mobile homes. Without a tracking system, solar panels remain fixed in one direction, leading to energy loss. CityFreighter’s Solartrackr automatically adjusts to the sun’s position, maximizing energy output. The system also includes an integrated anemometer that retracts the tracker during strong winds and adjusts its height to avoid collisions with roof hatches.
Priced at €1,381 (excluding the solar flex panel), the Solartrackr is a cost-effective alternative to premium models, such as a €5,000 version made in California. Weighing only 21 kg and capable of supporting a 340W panel, it is a lightweight and portable solution for mobile home owners. Additionally, the tracker can be used in other applications such as powering bus stops, remote locations, and off-grid systems.
igus components play a key role in the Solartrackr’s movement system. The PRT-04 slewing ring bearing allows the solar panel to rotate smoothly and precisely in any direction without lubrication. 3D-printed igus gears provide accurate angular positioning, ensuring maximum energy absorption. The height adjustment mechanism features a stainless-steel trapezoidal lead screw with an iglidur J lead screw nut, delivering reliable performance in all weather conditions.
To enhance durability, CityFreighter uses igus plain bearings and thrust washers made from materials like iglidur J, iglidur G, and iglidur W300. These materials are known for their wear resistance and maintenance-free performance, making them ideal for outdoor use. Michael Schoening, CEO of CityFreighter Europe GmbH, highlighted the importance of igus components, stating, “Their lubrication-free design, precision, and durability help us offer a reliable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective solution.”
CityFreighter is currently transitioning from prototype to full-scale production and has launched a presale campaign on a crowdfunding platform. This gives early adopters the chance to own the latest solar tracking technology before it hits the market.
