Volks Energie, a leading provider of solar energy, HVAC, and energy storage solutions, has been selected to support Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in transitioning from traditional lead-acid batteries to more sustainable and reliable Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. This move aligns with India’s commitment to long-term sustainability and phasing out environmentally harmful technologies.
Power Grid, which operates over 600 substations across India, plays a vital role in the country’s electricity transmission network. The shift to Ni-Cd batteries is expected to bring significant environmental and operational benefits. Unlike lead-acid batteries, which last 5-7 years, Ni-Cd batteries have a lifespan of over 20 years. This reduces hazardous waste and lowers long-term operational costs.
Volks Energie emphasized that Ni-Cd batteries are more reliable and resilient, particularly in extreme weather conditions. They also avoid issues like sudden failure, which are common with Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries.
