At the Elecrama 2025 event in Greater Noida, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal underscored the role of innovation in advancing India’s energy sector. He highlighted the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, stressing the vast opportunities this goal offers for the power industry.
Speaking to both national and international industry leaders, the minister emphasized that the power sector is central to India’s economic growth. He urged all stakeholders to invest in developing innovative technologies, such as advanced power electronics, efficient transformers, power converters, and smart grid systems, which are critical to tapping into renewable energy.
Lal stated, “The future of power in India is bright, but we need to boost production in innovative ways.” He called for increased focus on research and development to foster cutting-edge solutions in the sector.
The minister also noted the significant contribution of the power sector to India’s economy and the government’s ongoing efforts to expand its role. He pointed out the importance of improving transmission and distribution efficiency, specifically through technologies like GIS substations, which are key to modernizing the grid.
Lal further emphasized the need to accelerate the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This, he said, is vital for reducing emissions and supporting the country’s shift to e-mobility. He urged the industry to focus on building battery-swapping stations, fast-charging points, and vehicle-to-grid systems, which he identified as key growth areas.
Reassuring investors, Lal confirmed that the government is committed to facilitating initiatives that align with India’s energy goals. He expressed confidence that the 500 GW renewable energy target is within reach if the government and industry collaborate effectively.
Since 2014, India has made significant strides in expanding its renewable energy capacity, with an increase of 2.81 times to reach 200 GW and solar power growing by 38 times to surpass 100 GW. Lal pointed to these achievements as evidence of India’s rapid progress toward its energy targets.
