Schneider Electric Wins Major Contract with Tata Power for SF6-Free Green Switchgear

by sthv

Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and automation, has secured a significant contract with Tata Power Company Limited, based in Mumbai, to provide 11kV SF6-free Ring Main Units (RMUs). The RMUs will be powered by Schneider Electric’s advanced RM AirSeT SF6-free technology, marking an important milestone in India’s push for a more sustainable and efficient power distribution network.

The collaboration will see the installation of these SF6-free RMUs in Mumbai and Delhi, offering a modern alternative to traditional electrical equipment that uses sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. SF6 is known for its excellent insulating properties but is also a major contributor to global warming due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP), a fact that has led to global efforts to reduce its use.

This initiative is expected to reduce Tata Power’s carbon footprint by up to 75% compared to conventional SF6-based RMUs. Additionally, Tata Power is projected to save up to 50% in costs over the lifespan of these new RMUs.

Our partnership with Schneider Electric reflects our shared commitment to a greener future.”

The RM AirSeT units replace SF6 gas with pressurized air, making them more environmentally friendly while maintaining high performance and durability. These systems are designed for long-term endurance, extending the lifespan of the equipment. This partnership sets a new standard for sustainable power distribution in India, paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient energy future.
