2025 Pivotal Year for Electrification Sector to Attract New Talent, Says Recruitment Expert

by sthv

The electrification sector faces a critical opportunity to address its skills gap and attract new talent by 2025, according to Matt Devine, a senior customer-engagement director at Michael Page, a leading recruitment firm under the FTSE 250-listed PageGroup. Devine, who also serves on the board of the Electrification Revolution Skills (ERS) Hub, highlights the growing demand for engineers skilled in batteries, controls, drives, motors, and mechanical roles.

Recent data from Michael Page’s Talent Trends report reveals significant challenges in hiring for the sector. Approximately 73% of hiring managers cite finding candidates with the right skills as a major hurdle, compared to just 48% across the broader UK job market. At the same time, 56% of manufacturing professionals feel stagnant in their current roles, and 43% worry they’ve missed out on better career opportunities due to hesitation about leaving their jobs.

“This is the moment for the electrification industry to amplify its message and showcase the opportunities it offers,” Devine said. He emphasized the need for the sector to attract talent by promoting career growth and innovation.

ERS Hub: A Key Resource for Skills and Careers

Devine is urging industry stakeholders to rally behind the ERS Hub, an interactive platform that has become a central resource for careers and skills development in UK electrification. Since its launch 20 months ago, the hub has seen nearly 200,000 unique visits to its website, ershub.co.uk. Visitors use the platform to explore thousands of job listings, hundreds of training programs, and the PEMD Body of Knowledge—a tool designed to outline competencies and career paths. Additionally, the Electrification Self-Assessment Tool helps individuals and employers identify skills gaps.

“We need to spread the word far and wide,” Devine said. “The challenge is to inspire young people, who are increasingly motivated by the desire to make a positive impact on the planet. To address the skills shortage, we must ensure electrification is a top consideration when students make career decisions at school, college, or university.”

A Call to Action for the Next Generation

Devine stressed the importance of engaging the next generation to secure the UK’s position as a leader in electrification. “This is a complex challenge, but it’s one we must tackle head-on to equip the UK with the skills needed to stay ahead in this rapidly evolving field,” he said.
