Vending Machine Installed at Progressive Apprentice Academy to Boost Training and Efficiency

by sthv

As Progressive Technology Group approaches its 50th anniversary, the Newbury-based company continues to expand its operations and workforce. Founded in 1977, the company relocated to larger premises in 2013, marking a turning point in its growth. Over the past decade, Progressive Technology has opened new divisions, entered new markets, and earned prestigious awards from industry leaders like AMG Petronas and Rolls-Royce.

Today, the company employs over 250 people and holds ISO:9001 and AS:9100 accreditations. A key part of its success lies in its commitment to nurturing talent through its Apprentice Academy, established in 2015. Recently, Tooling Intelligence Ltd donated a SmartDrawer vending solution to the academy, further enhancing its training capabilities.

The Apprentice Academy welcomed 18 new apprentices in 2024, continuing its mission to develop skilled engineers for the future. The facility is equipped with advanced technologies, ranging from basic manual machines to high-end multi-functional tools. Three full-time trainers and a computer classroom support the apprentices’ academic and technical training.

A critical aspect of the training involves using high-end cutting tools and inventory management systems. Tooling Intelligence, a technical partner of Progressive Technology, installed its first SmartDrawer vending system at the company in 2014. Due to its success, two more systems were added in 2016 and 2024.

The SmartDrawer system is designed to meet the specific needs of its users. It uses smart technology to dispense items accurately and monitor inventory in real time. This provides complete visibility and control over the supply chain. The system’s benefits, including cost savings and improved inventory management, have made it a valuable tool for Progressive Technology.

The SmartDrawer features individually locked compartments and a user-friendly touchscreen interface. It allows employees to access consumables, equipment, and cutting tools easily. The system also tracks which items are used, by whom, and when, creating a complete audit trail. This level of detail is crucial for apprentices who will eventually work in advanced production facilities.

In December 2024, Tooling Intelligence donated a fourth SmartDrawer to the Apprentice Academy, alongside a fifth installation on the company’s 24/7 manufacturing shopfloor. The donation also included a selection of cutting tools commonly used in the industry, such as solid carbide and indexable milling and turning tools.

Richard Swaffield, Managing Director of Tooling Intelligence, commented: “We are proud to support Progressive Technology in their growth journey over the past decade. Their repeat business is a testament to the effectiveness of our SmartDrawer system. By donating a SmartDrawer to the Apprentice Academy, we aim to equip the next generation of engineers with the skills and knowledge needed for modern manufacturing.”

The SmartDrawer system not only improves efficiency but also ensures that the right tools are always available. For Progressive Technology, this donation represents another step forward in its mission to develop skilled talent and maintain its position as an industry leader.
