The UK’s National Police Air Service (NPAS) has placed an order for seven Airbus H135 helicopters as part of its fleet modernization plan. The deal, secured through procurement agency BlueLight Commercial, makes Airbus the exclusive supplier for NPAS for up to six years.
Aging Fleet to Be Replaced
NPAS currently operates 16 H135s and four H145s, some of the oldest and most heavily used police helicopters in the UK. These aircraft were transferred from regional police forces when NPAS was formed over 13 years ago.
Chief Superintendent Vicki White, NPAS Chief Commercial Officer, said:
“NPAS responds to over 100 air support calls daily, helping save lives, fight crime, and protect communities. Our current fleet has served us well, but these new helicopters will ensure we continue delivering critical services. We expect the first delivery in 2027.”
Airbus Extends Longstanding Partnership
Airbus has been the sole provider of NPAS helicopters since its creation. Richard Atack, interim managing director of Airbus Helicopters UK, said:
“We’re honored to support NPAS with this fleet renewal. Their trust reflects our commitment to UK security and operational excellence.”
Enhanced Safety & Training
The new H135s will feature Airbus’ Helionix avionics, improving safety and reducing pilot workload. One aircraft will be used exclusively for pilot training on the new system.
Global Reliability
Over 1,440 H135s are in service worldwide, logging 7.5 million flight hours across 320 operators. NPAS helicopters are among the most intensively used police aircraft globally, with Airbus also providing maintenance and support.
This order marks a major step in modernizing UK police aviation, ensuring NPAS remains effective in emergency response and crime prevention.
