Ørsted is now accepting applications for its expanded 2025 Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship Programme, but the deadline to apply is today. This four-year apprenticeship offers individuals an opportunity to gain technical skills, hands-on offshore experience, and contribute to the fight against climate change. The program provides practical experience at Ørsted sites across the UK’s East and West Coasts, including Barrow-in-Furness, Birkenhead, and Grimsby.
As the UK accelerates its shift to cleaner energy sources, the demand for skilled wind turbine technicians is increasing. The government’s goal of 43–50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 is expected to triple the workforce to over 100,000. Ørsted’s apprenticeship program helps aspiring technicians build the skills they need to support this transition, contributing to the country’s green energy future.
Now in its ninth year, the apprenticeship begins with a year of classroom-based learning at North Lindsey College. The following three years provide practical offshore experience at one of Ørsted’s 12 wind farms, where apprentices work alongside industry experts and gain hands-on experience. Apprentices also engage with local communities, helping promote Ørsted’s work. One apprentice even had the opportunity to be interviewed by Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden at BBC London studios, sharing insights from their apprenticeship journey.
Rob Howes, Ørsted’s operations apprentice manager, said, “This is an incredible chance to gain experience with the cutting-edge technology that is driving the UK’s renewable energy transition. As demand for wind turbine technicians grows, we are expanding our apprenticeship program to develop the next generation of professionals. If you enjoy problem-solving, working outdoors, and being part of a close-knit team, this apprenticeship offers a foundation for a rewarding career.”
Upon completing the program, successful apprentices will receive a Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) qualification, as well as a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering. Ørsted boasts a strong track record of retaining talent, with over 95% of apprentices transitioning into full-time positions within the company.
Fiona Paterson, a first-year apprentice based in Barrow-in-Furness, shared her experience: “The first year has been college-based, where I’ve learned the fundamentals in hands-on classes. Ørsted encourages your passion and teamwork, making the apprenticeship both fun and informative. I’m excited to start my second year and work offshore, applying my skills on the turbines.”
Coleen Forde, head of competency management at Ørsted, added: “Whether you are leaving school or seeking a career change, this apprenticeship offers the chance to develop valuable skills and be part of a growing industry that matters. Many of our apprentices have advanced to team leader and operations manager roles.”
This apprenticeship provides more than just job training—it offers the opportunity to build a career in one of the fastest-growing sectors, contributing to a sustainable future.
