ÖBB-Infrastruktur has awarded a €76 million contract to a joint venture between Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group and Porr Group for the installation of slab track in the Semmering Base Tunnel.
The contract covers the installation of 55 kilometers of slab track within the 27.3-kilometer twin-bore tunnel, as well as additional works including ballasted track, noise protection, substructures, steel construction, earthworks, concrete and ceiling works, and the installation of turnouts at both tunnel portals.
Work will begin with the planning and production of track supporting slabs in June 2025. Construction is expected to start in April 2027.
As part of the BTA Semmering Basistunnel 4.1 joint venture, the two companies are also responsible for the railway technology in the tunnel. This includes the installation of telecommunications, high-voltage systems, distribution systems, lighting, emergency escape signage, and mechanical systems for air conditioning, ventilation, and fire suppression.
Porr CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Once completed, trains will travel through the Semmering Base Tunnel at speeds of up to 230 km/h. This means that these rail tracks must deliver top performance.”
Strauss added that the joint venture would use its expertise in railway construction and apply the well-established Slab Track Austria system, developed by ÖBB and Porr. This system will ensure high track quality and precision while minimizing maintenance needs.
The Semmering Base Tunnel is being constructed from five locations, with 14 tunneling drives. The twin-tube railway tunnel will connect Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag, linking the Austrian federal states of Lower Austria and Styria. The tunnel is expected to open in 2030.
