INOX Air Products, India’s largest producer of industrial, medical, and electronic gases, has launched its first green hydrogen manufacturing plant. The plant, located at Asahi India Glass Limited’s (AIS) new facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, is a major milestone in India’s push towards sustainable industrial practices.
The plant is part of a 20-year partnership with AIS, India’s leading glass manufacturer. Under this agreement, INOX will supply green hydrogen, which will be produced using solar energy and an electrolysis process. This collaboration aims to transform the float glass production process by integrating green hydrogen.
The facility will produce up to 190 tons of green hydrogen annually, with 95 tons earmarked for the AIS plant in its first phase. This marks the first-ever use of green hydrogen in glass production in India.
“We are pioneering a sustainable approach to glass manufacturing by using solar power to generate green hydrogen,” INOX Air Products stated. “This project is a key step in reducing the carbon footprint of industrial processes and promoting green hydrogen in India’s manufacturing sector.”
The facility is powered by a solar plant, which supplies renewable energy for hydrogen production, further emphasizing the commitment to sustainability. AIS has also invested in solar power infrastructure at its Soniyana plant.
Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOX Air Products, highlighted the environmental benefits of the initiative, stating, “Our green hydrogen supply will help reduce CO2 emissions at AIS’ facility by approximately 1,250 tons annually. This is an important step in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”
Rupinder Shelly, Chief Operating Officer of Architectural Glass at AIS, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. “The launch of INOXAP’s green hydrogen plant strengthens our commitment to sustainable operations. Our goal is to meet 94% of the energy needs of our Soniyana facility through green energy sources. We will continue to invest in sustainable technologies for de-carbonization and circularity.”
The facility is part of AIS’s greenfield project to manufacture high-quality float glass, supported by AGC Europe, which provided the technology for the facility. This collaboration between INOX Air Products and AIS sets new standards for sustainable manufacturing, aiming to promote a greener future for India’s industrial sector.
