Infineon Unveils New 24/48V Power PROFET™ + Smart Power Switches for Next-Generation Automotive Power Systems

by sthv

Infineon Technologies AG has launched its new Power PROFET™ + 24/48V switch family, designed to meet the growing demands of the automotive industry’s shift toward hybrid and electric vehicles. As vehicles move away from traditional 12V and 24V power systems, 48V power sources are becoming the new standard. These systems offer improved performance, energy efficiency, and enhanced passenger comfort, particularly in next-generation electric vehicles.

The Power PROFET™ + 24/48V switches come in a compact, TO-leadless package and are available in two high-side switch variants: the BTH50030-1LUA with an RDS(ON) of 3.0 mΩ, and the BTH50015-1LUA with an RDS(ON) of 1.5 mΩ. These low-resistance switches help minimize power loss in high-current applications, making them ideal for automotive electrical systems. The new switches are specifically tailored for use in commercial, hybrid, and electric vehicles, where they improve vehicle safety, reduce energy consumption, and increase comfort.

A key feature of the Power PROFET™ + 24/48V switches is their high efficiency and small size. They are designed with resettable and diagnostic capabilities and offer low on-resistance (as low as 1.5 mΩ) for robust performance in high-current conditions. Built to withstand harsh environments, these switches can function effectively in both cabin and engine compartments, withstanding over 1,000,000 switching cycles—significantly more than the 200,000 cycles typical of conventional relays. This makes them highly reliable for long-term use in demanding automotive settings.

The switches also come with integrated protection and diagnostic features, including short-circuit, over-current, and over-temperature protections, to prevent failures within the vehicle’s power supply network. Diagnostic signals help identify faults, improving system reliability. The switches are housed in an 8-pin TO-leadless package, which reduces the footprint by 23% compared to traditional D2PAK packages while maintaining excellent thermal performance. Additionally, the load current sense accuracy is calibrated to ±5%, allowing for precise current monitoring.

For easy integration and evaluation, Infineon provides the Infineon Automotive Power Explorer, an online simulation tool available through the Infineon Developer Center. This tool helps engineers calculate fuse characteristics and visualize the sense current range for different load currents, simplifying the implementation process. The Power PROFET™ + 24/48V switches are also PRO-SIL™ ISO 26262-ready, with a safety application note available to assist in hardware evaluation for compliance.

The BTH50030-1LUA and BTH50015-1LUA models are already in production, and the product line will expand with the BTH50060-1LUA model, which features 6 mΩ resistance. Samples are available upon request, and Infineon also offers an Arduino shield (BOARD BTH50015-1LUA) to facilitate integration and testing.
