The Indian Navy has signed a significant agreement with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL) for the design and development of a 6MW marine diesel engine. The agreement, valued at Rs 270 crore, falls under the Make-I category, which focuses on enhancing indigenous capabilities. The signing ceremony took place recently in South Delhi, with Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of State for Defence Production, and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, in attendance.
As part of this project, a prototype diesel engine will be developed with over 50% indigenous content. The Indian government will fund 70% of the project, which also includes the development of detailed designs for 3-10MW diesel engines. These engines will be used for main propulsion and power generation aboard Indian Navy ships and Indian Coast Guard vessels.
This move marks a significant shift in India’s approach to manufacturing large capacity marine engines. Historically, the country has relied on foreign manufacturers for such engines, but this initiative is a step towards achieving self-reliance in defence production. It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to indigenise key defence technologies and promote Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in India’s defence sector.
