ABB India has implemented state-of-the-art automation and digital technologies for IndianOil Corporation Ltd’s nationwide oil and gas pipeline network, the largest in India. Spanning over 20,000 kilometers, this network is vital for meeting the country’s energy needs, transporting 125 million metric tons of oil and 49 million metric standard cubic meters of gas annually.
A key part of the project was the integration of ABB’s Centralized Pipeline Information Management System (CPIMS) for IndianOil. This included the design, engineering, supply, and commissioning of ABB’s Ability™ SCADAvantage digital platform. The platform features advanced cybersecurity and disaster recovery capabilities hosted on the cloud, enabling centralized management of IndianOil’s pipelines and ensuring smoother operations. To ensure the network’s long-term sustainability, ABB will also provide a 10-year service contract through the ABB Care agreement.
Senthil Kumar N, Director (Pipelines) at IndianOil, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “CPIMS tackles the operational challenges of our vast pipeline system. With this advanced technology, we aim to replace manual processes, enhancing efficiency, productivity, and reliability.” He also praised the long-standing partnership between IndianOil and ABB, which has lasted over a decade.
G. Balaji, Head of ABB Energy Industries in India, emphasized the global importance of energy security, stating, “As global energy demands rise, ABB is focused on improving energy security while optimizing existing systems to be more efficient and sustainable. Our collaboration with IndianOil on CPIMS will significantly improve pipeline safety, integrity, and efficiency, with real-time data monitoring and robust cybersecurity.”
ABB was awarded the CPIMS project in February 2024 and has delivered the integrated solutions within a year. The systems are currently being commissioned.
