Siemens Mobility officially broke ground last week on a £100 million facility in Chippenham, Wiltshire. This marks the beginning of the construction of a cutting-edge innovation hub that will shape the future of rail technology in the UK.
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside Siemens Mobility’s leadership team, Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson, former employees with ties to the company dating back to the 1900s, and local community members.
The new facility, set to open in 2026, will house around 800 employees. It will focus on developing and producing next-generation digital and conventional rail signalling and control systems for both the UK and international markets.
Rob Morris, joint CEO and managing director for Rail Infrastructure and Software UKI, highlighted the significance of the project. “This milestone marks an important step for Siemens Mobility and the UK rail industry,” he said. “This investment shows our commitment to innovation in rail technology, aiming to transform rail travel for passengers and freight across the UK. It was particularly special to see past employees and local schoolchildren, who represent both our proud history and the future of our industry.”
A Boost for the Local Economy
Lord Peter Hendy, the Rail Minister, emphasized the long-term benefits of the new facility. “This £100 million investment will bring significant opportunities,” he said. “New and ongoing rail projects will benefit from advanced signalling systems, helping modernize infrastructure and improving services for millions of passengers.”
He also noted that the new site will create over 800 jobs, offering local residents a chance to build careers in the railway industry, which he described as “very rewarding.” Hendy expressed his excitement for the positive impact the facility will have on both the local economy and Wiltshire’s growth potential.
Sustainable Construction and Community Engagement
Nick McQuaid, regional director at Bowmer + Kirkland, the project’s main contractor, expressed excitement about the partnership. “We are thrilled to work with Siemens Mobility on this state-of-the-art facility in Chippenham,” he said. “Our expertise in high-quality construction and sustainable building methods will contribute to this landmark project.”
The new facility, located at Southpoint Business Park, will meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards. It will feature energy-efficient production areas and eco-friendly office spaces. Siemens Mobility is also committed to promoting sustainability by increasing green spaces, planting native species, and creating new wildlife habitats on the site.
This investment is set to play a key role in advancing rail technology while benefiting the local community and environment.
