NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has achieved a major milestone by producing over 2 million tons of hot metal in the fiscal year 2024-25. The production took place at its integrated steel plant in Nagarnar and marks a 100% increase from the previous year, when the plant produced 966,468 tons in its first seven and a half months of operation.
Now in its second year, the plant is operating at 60% of its designed capacity. NSL aims to reach full capacity of 3.3 million tons per annum (MTPA) of hot metal by the end of this fiscal year. The plant was officially commissioned on August 15, 2023. Since then, it has shown steady growth and consistent performance, underlining the company’s commitment to operational excellence.
Despite a challenging market environment, NSL has expanded its market footprint. During FY 2024-25, the company sold over 1.45 million tons of Hot Rolled Coils (HRC) and Sheets. This marks a 300% increase in sales volume compared to the previous year, reflecting NSL’s growing customer base and stronger market position.
In March 2025, NSL set a new monthly dispatch record by delivering 229,874 tons of HRC. This was the highest volume recorded in a single month since production began. A key factor behind this achievement was the deployment of four Liberalized Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) rakes, which moved around 40,000 tons of HRC during March. This figure also represents a 63% jump from February’s previous record of 141,207 tons. NSL plans to introduce more LSFTO rakes to further improve dispatch capabilities and customer service.
Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Chairman and Managing Director of NMDC and NSL, praised the team’s efforts under difficult conditions. “Our steel team continues to gain strength and achieve milestones every day. With their dedication and enthusiasm, I am confident we will soon reach our rated capacity and move toward EBIDTA positivity,” he said.
NSL has also made progress in quality standards. The company obtained four ISO licenses and seven Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifications. These achievements reinforce NSL’s presence in the domestic market. Additionally, the company received the Conformité Européenne (CE) certification, which allows its products to enter the European market.
Shri Joydeep Dasgupta, Director of Production at NMDC and NSL, acknowledged the team’s resilience. “Team NSL has confidently moved forward, and we are optimistic about continued achievements,” he said.
Shri MNVS Prabhakar, Executive Director and Head of the Nagarnar Steel Plant, also applauded his team. “We are dedicated to producing the highest quality Hot Rolled steel for our customers. We remain focused on strengthening our position and supporting the national goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.
NMDC Steel Limited, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, continues to focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation. With its recent progress, NSL is setting new standards in India’s steel manufacturing sector.
