JA SOLAR and Borussia Dortmund Partner to Build World’s Largest Stadium Roof Solar System

by sthv

JA SOLAR, a major global producer of photovoltaic (PV) modules, has joined forces with Borussia Dortmund, one of Europe’s most popular football clubs, to install the world’s largest solar power system on a stadium roof. The solar panels will be fitted on top of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, the home ground of Borussia Dortmund. This partnership marks a major step in promoting clean energy and highlights the stadium’s role as a leader in sustainability.

SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is known for having the highest average attendance in European football. With this new project, it is set to become an example of how sports venues can support the global shift to renewable energy.

JA SOLAR chooses its partners based on shared values such as integrity, respect, and a strong focus on sustainability. These values align closely with Borussia Dortmund’s commitment to protecting the environment. The solar installation is part of a long-term plan by both companies to use cleaner energy and reduce carbon emissions. Once operational, the system will provide reliable green electricity for the next 30 years. It also reflects JA SOLAR’s continued commitment to the European solar market.

The system will use JA SOLAR’s Full-Black modules, which are known for their high efficiency and stylish look. These modules match Borussia Dortmund’s black-and-yellow team colors and are suitable for both home and commercial use. Over 11,000 panels will be installed on the stadium’s roof. Together, they will generate more than 4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity every year. This amount is enough to power the floodlights for 1,000 football matches annually.

The new system will help Borussia Dortmund reduce its carbon emissions by about 1,800 tons of CO₂ each year. It will also make the stadium more energy-secure and less dependent on outside power sources. Installation is planned to begin in the summer of 2025 and is expected to finish by the end of that year.

Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund, said the club is excited about the project. “We are thrilled to collaborate with JA SOLAR on this important upgrade to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. This solar project shows our commitment to sustainability and new technology. With JA SOLAR’s help, we will build the largest solar system ever installed on a stadium roof, and we hope to inspire others to follow this path toward a greener future,” he said.

Henning Schulze, Vice President of JA SOLAR, shared similar views. “This project is more than a technical success. It shows how our values match those of Borussia Dortmund. We are proud to take part in this high-profile initiative, and it proves JA SOLAR’s commitment to long-term growth and real change in both the solar and sports sectors,” he said.

JA SOLAR will showcase its solar technology and provide more details about this partnership at Intersolar Europe in Munich from May 7 to 9, 2025. Visitors can find them at booth A2.280.

Founded in 2005, JA SOLAR is focused on making solar energy more available and promoting clean energy solutions worldwide. The company is committed to environmental and social responsibility. Its mission is based on putting customers first, supporting employees, and creating long-term value for partners. By working with organizations around the world, JA SOLAR aims to speed up the global shift to clean energy and build a sustainable future for everyone.
