Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), a prominent player in India’s commercial and defense shipbuilding, repairs, and heavy fabrication sectors, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). The agreement, finalized on April 7, 2025, at GRSE Bhavan, aims to strengthen India’s domestic commercial shipbuilding industry. This partnership aligns with the Indian government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative and highlights SDHI’s commitment to developing world-class maritime infrastructure in the country.
The collaboration will focus on building commercial vessels and offshore structures to meet both global and local maritime demands. By combining their expertise in design, infrastructure, and project management, SDHI and GRSE intend to create a scalable, efficient model for commercial shipbuilding. The MoU also establishes plans for shared facilities, co-development of vessel designs, and synchronized project management strategies, aiming to shorten turnaround times and enhance cost efficiency.
Additionally, the partnership will strengthen the vendor and supply chain network, emphasizing joint sourcing and procurement benefits. The MoU also prioritizes workforce development, ensuring that the growth of the shipbuilding sector is supported by skilled labor. Beyond vessel construction, both companies will collaborate on areas such as ship trials and repairs, fostering a long-term, cooperative industrial model.
This agreement reflects the shared goal of advancing India’s shipbuilding industry. It supports the development of cutting-edge infrastructure, drives maritime innovation, stimulates economic growth, and creates jobs. SDHI, formerly known as RNEL, is India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company.
