The UK government has announced 27 hydrogen projects selected for the next stage of the Second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2), as part of its “Plan for Change.” These projects aim to boost low-carbon hydrogen production and are expected to attract over £1 billion in private sector investment by 2029. This initiative aligns with the UK’s goal of becoming a leading ‘clean-energy superpower.’
Hydrogen is seen as a key component in decarbonizing industries with high emissions. The government highlights that the sector has already secured £400 million in private investments in locations like Milford Haven in Wales and High Marnham in Nottinghamshire. These projects are generating more than 700 direct jobs in construction and operations.
Creating Jobs and Supporting Industry
The UK government’s backing of hydrogen projects is expected to create thousands of additional jobs. These include roles for apprentices, graduates, and skilled professionals such as engineers, welders, pipefitters, and operations experts. Ammonia Production and Clean Power Generation
The new projects on the HAR2 shortlist are focused on using hydrogen to decarbonize industries like ammonia production, power generation, glass manufacturing, brick making, and sustainable aviation fuel production. Industry Minister Sarah Jones commented that the new initiative builds on the success of the First Hydrogen Allocation Round, where 11 projects were allocated more than £2 billion in government funding. One of the recipients, Whitelee Green Hydrogen in Scotland, will produce hydrogen for the InchDairnie Distillery, which plans to distill whisky sustainably by 2027.
