Ukrainian telecom giant Kyivstar, under the stewardship of VEON, plans a substantial expansion of its industrial generator fleet and battery reserves. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted service amidst prolonged blackouts resulting from attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
VEON, the Amsterdam-based digital operator overseeing Kyivstar, announced the deployment of 848 additional industrial generators and 61,766 batteries across Ukraine. These systems will be strategically placed, including at critical facilities requiring a minimum of three days of backup power during comprehensive outages.
Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest telecommunications operator, emphasizes that resilience has been a cornerstone of its strategy since the onset of conflict, safeguarding essential communication and digital services. Presently, the company has already installed 2,322 generators and 115,000 batteries with four-hour capacities at its base stations.
Oleksandr Komarov, CEO of Kyivstar, highlighted their ongoing commitment to energy resilience, citing investments exceeding $24 million over the past two years. He emphasized the necessity of reinforcing their strategy in response to evolving threats to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and prolonged blackouts.
At the Ukraine Recovery Conference in June, VEON and Kyivstar pledged a $1 billion investment in Ukraine from 2023 to 2027. This commitment underscores their dedication to supporting the country’s infrastructure amidst challenging times.
Additionally, Kyivstar was honored at MWC 2024 with the GSMA’s Global Mobile Award for ‘Best Mobile Innovation Supporting Emergency or Humanitarian Situations’ for its Network Resilience Project, which has played a crucial role in maintaining connectivity throughout Ukraine.
