MOKE International, the renowned British car manufacturer, has officially opened a new manufacturing facility in Leamington Spa. This marks a key moment in the company’s 60-year history. The new site is expected to improve production efficiency, enhance product quality, and better position MOKE to meet the growing demand for its Electric MOKE globally. With production targets set at over 500 units this year, the company plans to cater to markets including the USA and the Mediterranean. This expansion strengthens MOKE’s role as a net exporter and a contributor to the UK economy.
The opening was celebrated with an exclusive event attended by retail partners from Europe, the Middle East, and the USA, as well as Matt Western, the Labour MP for Warwick and Leamington. Western, who is also the chair of the APPG on Electric Vehicles (EVs), joined the celebration of British engineering and MOKE’s expanding international presence.
The new Leamington Spa facility underscores MOKE’s commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The company has created numerous new clean-tech jobs and expanded its workforce, which has now tripled in size. During the event, MOKE revealed new customization options for its vehicles, including a range of new colors for the body, Bimini, and wheels, allowing customers more choices. These updates reflect MOKE’s focus on sustainability, innovation, and style.
A Foundation for Future Growth
Nick English, MOKE International’s executive chairman, expressed pride in returning production to the UK, particularly to the Midlands, where the MOKE was originally designed by Sir Alec Issigonis. “As we celebrate 60 years of MOKE, we’re excited to mark this milestone with new advancements in craftsmanship and innovation, laying the groundwork for continued success,” he said.
Matt Western MP, who visited MOKE earlier this month, praised the company’s work in the EV sector. He noted the positive impact of new job creation and the company’s commitment to working with local suppliers. “I look forward to seeing MOKE continue to thrive and grow in Leamington Spa,” Western added.
The expansion also reflects MOKE’s dedication to people and local communities. The company has created new roles across production, engineering, quality, supply chain, and after-sales support. It is also investing in apprenticeship and graduate programs to nurture the next generation of talent in the EV sector.
A Strategic Move for Global Expansion
The new facility is part of MOKE’s long-term strategy. The company has invested heavily in vehicle safety, homologation, and country-specific compliance. As a result, the Electric MOKE is now available in the USA, Mexico, France, Spain, the Balearic Islands, Italy, and soon, Greece. The vehicle has achieved M1 Small Series Approval, EPA Certification, and CARB approval, making it the first EV from a low-volume manufacturer to achieve these distinctions. This will enable MOKE to sell its vehicles in all 50 US states.
Sustainability remains a central focus for MOKE, with approximately 70% of the Electric MOKE’s components sourced from Europe. This achievement places the company among a select group of independent car manufacturers. Additionally, MOKE has been invited to join Walpole, the prestigious governing body for the UK’s luxury goods sector, further solidifying its reputation for top-tier British craftsmanship.
