GreenLine Secures $275 Million to Boost Clean Trucking in India

by sthv

GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd, a pioneering logistics company in India backed by Essar, has announced a major $275 million equity investment to accelerate its efforts in clean transportation. The funding round includes a $20 million contribution from entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath and is seen as a significant step in reducing emissions in India’s high-emission road freight sector.

This investment will help deploy over 10,000 low-emission trucks across the country. In addition, GreenLine plans to set up 100 LNG refueling stations, electric vehicle charging points, and battery swapping infrastructure. The company’s goal is to reduce carbon emissions by one million tonnes annually, supporting India’s broader climate action efforts.

India’s logistics industry, which operates more than 4 million trucks, is a major contributor to the country’s carbon emissions. GreenLine’s strategy focuses on replacing diesel-powered trucks with cleaner alternatives, aligning with national targets to reduce greenhouse gases. By offering logistics services at the same cost as traditional diesel trucks, GreenLine ensures businesses can switch to greener options without extra expenses.

Currently, GreenLine operates a fleet of over 650 LNG-powered trucks, which have already traveled 38 million kilometers. This has led to a reduction of about 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The LNG trucks emit up to 30% less carbon dioxide compared to diesel-powered trucks and are already being used by leading clients in sectors like FMCG, metals, cement, chemicals, and oil & gas.

Anshuman Ruia, Director at Essar, remarked, “This is a crucial moment for India’s transport sector. We see great potential in building a strong green logistics network and integrating clean energy sources to support our electric truck fleet. This strategy will help reduce emissions, lessen dependence on imported energy, and create a cleaner, more energy-secure India.”

Anand Mimani, CEO of GreenLine, added, “Our goal has always been to revolutionize heavy transportation in India. This funding brings us closer to our vision. We encourage corporate India to take an active role in this transformation and help build a more sustainable logistics framework for the country.”

Nikhil Kamath, the investor, emphasized, “The logistics industry is undergoing a critical shift towards speed, efficiency, and sustainability. Supporting GreenLine is an investment in the future of freight, where cleaner alternatives are not just necessary, but essential. It’s time for more businesses to join the change.”

GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd, a part of the Essar Group, is India’s largest operator of LNG and electric-powered heavy commercial vehicles. The company uses LNG trucks for long-distance routes and electric vehicles for shorter hauls. Through its subsidiary, Ultra Gas and Energy Ltd., GreenLine is also building a nationwide network of LNG refueling stations. The company is dedicated to transforming India’s logistics sector with sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy.
