DMG Mori Unveils New Five-Axis Machining Centres for High-Performance Manufacturing

by sthv

DMG Mori has launched two new five-axis machining centres, the DMX 60 U and DMX 80 U, designed for high-performance machining of complex components. Represented in the UK by Coventry-based DMG Mori UK Ltd, these machines offer enhanced capabilities for handling workpieces weighing up to 300 kg and 350 kg, respectively.

The DMX 60 U features travel dimensions of 600 x 600 x 510 mm, while the larger DMX 80 U has a travel range of 800 x 600 x 510 mm. Both machines are competitively priced and equipped with a swivelling rotary table, providing three-plus-two-axis machining. Their robust design, based on a monolithic machine bed and solid castings, offers up to 50% greater static rigidity compared to previous models. This improved rigidity, combined with wide roller guideways on all axes, ensures excellent operational stability.

The new DMX U models also deliver faster performance, with rapid traverse rates of up to 42 m/min, 40% faster than their predecessors. Additionally, the speed of the rotary B-axis and C-axis has been improved from 6 rev/min to 10 rev/min for faster part positioning. Comprehensive multi-sensor temperature compensation guarantees thermal stability, ensuring consistent and precise machining. Direct drives and linear scales in the X and Y axes further enhance positioning accuracy.

Energy efficiency is a key feature of these machines, which are designed for a wide range of applications. The DMX U models come with the standard 12,000 rev/min inlineMASTER spindle, with optional SpeedMASTER spindles offering up to 200 Nm of torque or speeds of 20,000 rev/min.

For increased stability and accuracy during machining, the machines are equipped with the BIG PLUS face-and-taper toolholding interface. Tool magazine options range from 30 to 120 pockets, allowing for flexible tooling configurations. DMG Mori has focused on process integration, offering options such as incorporating grinding into the machining area to reduce the need for additional machines.

To further streamline operations, DMG Mori offers its Robo2Go Milling and MATRIS Light component handling solutions, along with pallet handling systems like the PH 150, PH Cell 300, and PH Cell Twin. These solutions enable automated operation, including during unattended shifts. The machines are also equipped with the CELOS X app-based user interface on a Siemens Sinumerik ONE or Heidenhain TNC7 CNC system, providing a digital platform for efficient processes.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, DMG Mori has equipped the DMX U machines with ‘GreenMode.’ This feature includes energy-efficient components and intelligent control systems, reducing energy consumption by 10% compared to previous-generation models, making production more ecologically friendly and cost-effective.
