Tata Steel has received two major honors for its achievements in intellectual property. The company was awarded the National Intellectual Property Award by the Indian Patent Office. It was named the “Top Public/Private Company for Patents Filing, Grant & Commercialization in India.” Tata Steel also won a World Intellectual Property Award from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as part of the WIPO Awards Program.
These awards recognize Tata Steel’s strong contribution to the field of intellectual property. The company has filed more than 2,000 patent applications across the world. In the financial year 2024 (FY24) alone, Tata Steel filed 142 patent applications and was granted 395 patents. Between FY20 and FY24, the company consistently filed over 130 patent applications each year. This shows Tata Steel’s strong focus on research, collaboration, and innovation.
Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, NMB, and Graphene at Tata Steel, said, “The steel industry has huge potential to create advantages through research and partnerships with top academic institutions. There is also an increasing need for R&D aimed at building a sustainable steel sector. Tata Steel has taken these opportunities seriously and continues to lead in technology and innovation. We also set a benchmark for intellectual capital development.”
Tata Steel’s focus on innovation dates back many decades. In 1937, the company set up one of India’s oldest R&D centers. It filed its first patent in 1938. Since then, it has built a strong portfolio of patents. Recently, the Indian Patent Office included Tata Steel’s work in a special publication highlighting innovations that align with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The National Intellectual Property Awards are given each year to honor individuals, institutions, and companies that make outstanding contributions to the creation and use of intellectual property. These awards aim to strengthen India’s intellectual property environment. They also promote innovation, creativity, and better management of intellectual property across industries.
