In response to ongoing electricity shortages, McDonald’s Ukraine Ltd. has proactively equipped over 70% of its restaurants across the country with generators. This strategic move is part of the company’s broader efforts to adapt its operations amid the challenging conditions brought about by the ongoing conflict, according to Dmytro Korbut, the company’s operating director.

Speaking to Interfax-Ukraine, Korbut explained, “McDonald’s is committed to resource conservation and energy efficiency. In light of the current war-related disruptions, we have begun installing generators to ensure that we can continue to serve our customers even during power outages. To date, more than 70 restaurants have been outfitted with these generators, and we are steadily working to extend this capability to additional locations.”

The company has also made adjustments to its production processes to address the challenges posed by prolonged power outages and high temperatures, which can lead to generator malfunctions. Korbut added, “Generators may need to be shut down periodically for cooling, which means our restaurants might close for short periods to ensure stable operation. This approach helps us maintain uninterrupted service.”

For locations without generators, power outages result in temporary closures. McDonald’s is particularly focused on maintaining the integrity of its food products during these disruptions. Modern, high-capacity refrigerators at the restaurants can preserve the required temperatures for up to 14 hours without electricity. “Once power is restored, we conduct thorough checks on product temperatures,” Korbut stated. “Frozen goods must remain between minus 24 and minus 18 degrees Celsius, while chilled items should be between plus 1 and plus 4 degrees Celsius. Any products that do not meet these standards are discarded.”

In cases of extended power outages, McDonald’s temporarily relocates products to warehouses equipped with generators to ensure safe storage. Despite the increased operational costs associated with fuel and generator maintenance, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to food safety and quality.

Korbut concluded, “The significant challenges and heightened costs have not deterred us from prioritizing the quality and safety of our food. McDonald’s has adapted effectively to power outages, ensuring that our products remain fresh and safe for our customers.”
