In a pioneering move towards sustainable energy, Hilora village in the Shiladze district of the Amedi area in Duhok province has successfully adopted solar power to address frequent electricity outages. Abdullah Sadiq, the Mukhtar (headman) of Hilora, shared this achievement with Kurdistan24 on Sunday, emphasizing the significant advantages of solar energy over traditional generators.
“Our village previously relied solely on the national grid, leaving us vulnerable to frequent outages,” Sadiq explained. “To tackle this issue, we decided to pool resources from each household to purchase solar panels. This collective effort has allowed us to bridge the energy gaps caused by the intermittent national grid supply.”
Sadiq, who conceived the solar initiative, collaborated with a local resident from Mergasur to facilitate the installation process. “Approximately 70 percent of the villagers are now benefiting from this solar electricity project,” he noted.
Hilora village, with over 60 households, customizes electricity production to meet varying demands, ranging from 5 to 20 amps per household. This adaptability ensures that every household’s needs are met.
Sadiq further praised solar power for its environmental and operational benefits. “Unlike generators, solar electricity does not pollute, is silent, and provides a consistent and uninterrupted power supply,” he said.
The success of Hilora’s solar initiative has inspired neighboring villages to adopt similar practices. Sadiq emphasized that the entire project was funded by the villagers themselves, with no external financial assistance.
“The high quality of the electricity produced has encouraged other villages to follow suit and rely on solar energy,” Sadiq concluded. “This project stands as a testament to our community’s commitment to sustainable and self-reliant energy solutions.”
